Friday evening March 17, 2023, a short time before 5:30pm, Claiborne County Deputies were involved in a chase after a driver in a silver van struck a police cruiser while trying to flee a traffic stop.
The fleeing driver, identified as 30-year-old Tyler Robinson of Middlesboro, Ky., refused to pull over after a deputy initiated a traffic stop in Harrogate. Instead, Robinson reportedly struck the cruiser of Narcotics Detective Jason Pabon sustaining damage to the driver's side of the van and he continued down Londonderry Road in the direction of Cumberland Gap High School. Pabon was not injured in the crash.

With more Claiborne units responding to the pursuit, Robinson traveled onto Highway 63 toward Campbell County in the vicinity of Tiger Mart. During the pursuit, Robinson and his passenger, 32-year-old Whitney Day of Harrogate, were seen attempting to throw physical evidence believed to be narcotics from the vehicle.
The chase made it's way through the area near Back Valley Road ending in Sugar Hollow at a dead-ended logging road where the pair were taken into custody and then lodged in the Claiborne County Jail by Narcotics Detectives Jason Pabon and Eric Fraley.
Tyler Robinson was charged with:
Aggravated assault on an officer, evading arrest (motor vehicle), reckless driving, reckless endangerment, tampering with physical evidence, possession of Methamphetamine for resale, possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to due care, driving on suspended license, driving under the influence, open container, littering, failure to drive within lane, failure to signal, failure to obey stop sign, failure to yield to emergency vehicle, and headlights required during inclement weather.
Whitney Day was charged with:
Accessory after the fact, possession of Methamphetamine for resale, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
