From WRIL The Big One -
The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency states they are investigating a fatal side-by-side crash.
According to TWRA officials, two men, one from Lafollette, TN, and the other from Oneida, TN, entered the North Cumberland Wildlife Management Area from Highway 63 riding a side-by-side at 8:30 pm on Saturday, November 9th.
Authorities further stated that the men eventually drove off a 200-foot-tall rock wall and landed in the sand mines area. Despite wearing a seatbelt, the passenger suffered serious injuries and was knocked unconscious. The driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown out of the vehicle and died in the accident. The passenger regained consciousness shortly before 3:30 am on Sunday morning and dialed 911 for assistance.
Due to the location of the incident, a National Guard Blackhawk helicopter was used after a rescue squad stabilized the passenger. The helicopter arrived on scene at approximately 9:00am to fly him to a hospital for treatment of injuries.
TWRA officials said the driver’s body was recovered at around 11:30 am Sunday morning. Neither individual has been identified at this time, but more information is expected on Monday the 11th.
The TWRA is currently conducting an ongoing investigation.
