Tazewell, Tn. Police Officer injured while making arrest

Danny Williams - CCJ

Thursday morning August 11, 2022, at approximately 8:44am, Sgt. Andrew Sturgill made a traffic stop on a maroon Dodge Caravan with temporary Florida license plates at the corner of Elk Street and Mimosa Street. The driver, identified as 59-year-old Danny Williams of Tazewell, fled the vehicle on foot and attempted to enter a residence on the corner.


Sgt. Sturgill then gave chase to Williams and as he caught up to him on the front steps of the residence, a struggle ensued. During the fight the two fell down the stairs resulting in Sgt. Sturgill breaking his ankle. Williams still attempted to flee and although injured, Sgt. Sturgill was able to request assistance via radio, advising he was injured. The sergeant was still able to successfully arrest Williams without further incident.


Officers from the Tazewell Police Department and Claiborne County Sheriffs Office responded to the assistance call taking custody of Williams. Sgt. Sturgill was then transported by Claiborne E.M.S. to Claiborne Medical Center for treatment.


Danny Williams was lodged in the Claiborne County Jail charged with the following:

Driving while license suspended

Assault (Police Officer)

Resisting stop, halt, frisk or arrest

Possession of drug paraphernalia

Possession of Schedule II controlled Substance

Introduction of contraband into a penal facility
