On Wednesday June 13, 2024, an individual came to the Middlesboro Police Department reporting he had been contacted by World Finance following a fraud alert when a man, later identified as 33-year-old Matthew Music of Pennington, Va., attempted to obtain a loan in his name.

Middlesboro Lt. Det Barry Cowan spoke to an employee of the business who stated that he received a call from a male applying for a loan identifying himself as the victim. Music provided a birthdate and Social Security number.

Later that same day, Lt. Cowan called the number Music had used to call World Finance and asked for the person Music was impersonating. The detective then stated he was with World Finance and offered more options on a possible loan totaling $2,200. Music asked if "his brother", actually being Music himself, could come pick up the loan due to him being sick. A time was then agreed upon for Thursday, June 13th.

At 11:17am Music arrived at the store, Lt. Cowan then responded detaining him and taking him to Middlesboro Police headquarters for an interview. He admitted to calling World Finance and using the victim's name and identifying information to obtain the money.

Matthew Music has been lodged in the Bell County Detention Center charged with theft of identity of another without consent.
