A Middlesboro woman has been arrested for exploiting another person. According to the citations on Tuesday, July 9th Middlesboro Officers, lead by Sgt. Jeremiah Johnson, made the arrest of 43-year-old Laura Raines at West End mobile home park.
Raines has been charged with exploiting a disabled 59-year-old woman which resulted in a financial loss of $18,483.00 of Social Security benefits and a loss of over $300.00 in EBT/food stamps, which she is accused of using for her own profit.
During Raines arrest, she pulled away from officers attempting to go through her residence. She took a blue prescription container out of her shirt trying to hide it and it was found to contain Gabepentin, Alprazolam, and Buprenorphine tablets. Also during this time an unknown white powder dispersed as she was resisting officers.
Raines was also heard by officers stating that the victim "did not have enough sense to take care of herself."
Laura Raines was booked into the Bell County Detention Center charged with knowingly exploiting an adult (over $300), fraudulent use of an ID card or electronic code for benefits, fraudulent use of a credit card over $1,000 but under $10,000, theft of mail matter, theft of identity of another without consent, resisting arrest, possession of controlled substance - 2nd degree (drug unspecified), possession of controlled substance - 3rd degree (drug unspecified), and tampering with physical evidence.
