Middlesboro Man Leads Tennessee and Kentucky Police On A Chase After Attempted Robbery

As we reported on Sunday, August 18th, there was a large police presence gathered on Highway 25E on Log Mountain in Pineville after a chase out of Claiborne County Tennessee came to an end. The incident stems from a robbery call at sSubway in Tazewell on North Broad Street.


Tazewell Police Chief Jeremy Myers tells us that at 5:23pm Claiborne E911 received calls about the robbery and officers were dispatched to the scene arriving within approximately 30 seconds.


Claiborne Dispatch, and on scene officers, relayed information about the suspect, later identified as 68-year-old Thomas L. Johnson, originally from Middlesboro, Kentucky. Johnson fled the scene Northbound on U. S. 25e on a motorcycle.


Claiborne County Sheriff's Office Deputies intercepted the motorcycle near Harrogate, attempting a traffic stop, and Johnson fled. A pursuit was initiated and continued into Middlesboro, Kentucky where the U. S. Park Service, Middlesboro Police, Bell County Sheriff’s Office, and Kentucky State Police took over the pursuit.


The pursuit came to an end on Highway 25E on Log Mountain in Pineville, Kentucky when Johnson lost control and crashed. He was taken into custody and uninjured.


Thomas Johnson was transported back to Claiborne County Jail and was charged with Attempted Robbery by Tazewell Police and Felony Evading by the U.S. Park Service. He was additionally charged with Resisting Arrest, Reckless Driving, and Failure to Yield to lights and sirens.


Chief Myers tells us "thankfully no one was injured in the robbery attempt. Tazewell Police Department would like to thank all of the coordinating agencies and officers for their assistance in apprehending Mr. Johnson."


Also at the scene in Pineville was Bell County EMS and Pineville Police Department.
