Early Sunday morning October 30, 2022, a short time after 12:30am, a London Kentucky Police officer was involved in an accident that took his life. Kentucky State Police are investigating the tragic incident.
The preliminary investigation indicates that a 2022 Ram Pickup Truck operated by 36-year-old Casey P. Byrd of Oneida, TN was traveling north on KY 229 (Barbourville Rd) when his vehicle entered the intersection of South Main Street and struck a 2019 Dodge Charger Police Cruiser traveling southbound on South Main Street operated by on-duty London PD Officer 26-year-old Logan K. Medlock of Keavy, KY.
As a result of the collision, Officer Medlock suffered life-threatening injuries, and was pronounced deceased on scene by the Laurel County Coroner’s Office. Mr. Byrd was not injured in the collision.
Byrd has been charged in the incident with operating a motor vehicle under the influence - 1st degree (aggravated circumstances) and murder of a police officer. He is being held in the Laurel County Correctional Center on a $1,000,000 cash bond.
London Chief of Police Travis Dotson said his employee was "an outstanding police officer and we love him, we're heart broken." The chief thanks the KSP for their assistance and those who have reached out to help the department during this difficult time. He added that this is "a great loss for this community and we will never forget him."
