Kentucky State Police Investigating Letcher County Officer Involved Shooting

From KSP Post 10 -

On January 21, 2021, at approximately 1:54 A.M, Kentucky State Police, Post 13, Hazard, received a call from Post 10, Harlan, advising that a pursuit was about to enter Letcher County on US-119 South.


Troopers with Post 13, Hazard, picked up the pursuit and pursued a black Chevrolet Tahoe North on US-119 South.


Upon the pursuit entering the city limits of Whitesburg, Officers with Whitesburg Police Department were standing by to assist with the pursuit. At this time, the suspect vehicle drove towards officers, striking a Whitesburg Police Department vehicle. Fearing being struck by the suspect vehicle, officers discharged their service weapon.


The pursuit continued onto US-119 North until the suspect lost control of his vehicle and collided with an embankment bringing the pursuit to an end. The operator Jared Ratliff, 28, of Jenkins, was transported to Pikeville Medical Center to be treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.


Ratliff is being charged with one count of Wanton Endangerment 1st Degree (police Officer). This incident remains under investigation by the Kentucky State Police, Critical incident Response Team, and Detectives at Post 13, Hazard.
