From WRIL -
Early Friday morning December 4, 2020, at approximately 6:18 am, Tennessee Highway Patrol responded to a deadly three-vehicle crash at the intersection of Highway 33 and Chumley Rd.
Trooper William Goode states in his preliminary report given to WRIL that a 2013 Toyota RAV 4 driven by 88-year-old Don Welch of Middlesboro was traveling southbound on Highway 33 and crossed the center divider line.
Welch’s vehicle sideswiped a 2002 Mercury Sabre driven by 35-year-old Darla Reed of New Tazewell, Tn. The RAV 4 then traveled into the path of a third vehicle, a 2007 Toyota Solara, driven by 54-year-old Robin Keck of New Tazewell hitting her head-on.
The report shows that no one else involved was injured in the accident.
While no drugs or alcohol use is indicated in the accident, Welch had not been wearing his seatbelt and the trooper states it would have made a difference.
