KSP Trooper Shane Jacobs tells WRIL that at 1:34am Thursday, March 23, 2023, Post 10 Harlan received a call at 901 School Road in Cumberland. The caller the boyfriend of the victim - 46-year-old Michael Cornett of Cumberland, advised he shot his 31-year-old girl friend Stacey Houser, during a domestic dispute.
KSP Troopers, Cumberland Police Department and Life Guard EMS responded, locating Houser in a bedroom with gunshot wound. She was unresponsive. Harlan County Coroner John Noe then arrived pronouncing Ms. Houser deceased.
The preliminary investigation determined that this was a domestic dispute which lead to Mr. Cornett brandishing a fire arm and shooting Ms. Houser, causing her death. An autopsy is being performed.
Michael Cornett has been charged with murder and lodged in the Harlan County detention Center.
KSP Trooper Rodney Sturgill is leading the investigation.
