On Wednesday night August 24th a Claiborne County Jail employee was assaulted by an inmate. The employee was stabbed in the ear by the inmate who used an item he altered and made into a weapon.
The staff member was given medical attention at the facility, taken to Claiborne Medical Center, and then on to UT Medical Center for more specialized treatment. While serious, the injury was not life-threatening and the staff member is expected to recover quickly according to Jail Administrator Tim Shrout.
The inmate has been identified as Austin Wayne Greer. He has since been transferred to Blount County Jail and he will be charged with assault on the staff member.
Austin Greer was being held at the Claiborne Jail on charges of aggravated assault, possession of a schedule IV drug, introduction of contraband into a penal facility, theft under $500, and tampering with evidence.
Shrout also tells us that the investigation is ongoing and others are expected to be charged.
